About the survey

What is the purpose of the Screen Industry Survey?

The Screen Industry Survey is sent to businesses involved in some way with the screen industry in New Zealand. A detailed survey of the screen industry recognises the industry’s contribution to the New Zealand economy, and identifies the potential for, and impediments to, its continuing growth. The information you provide will help build a better understanding of the needs and practices of businesses in the New Zealand screen industry.

Who is included in the survey?

The Screen Industry Survey is sent to approximately 3,100 businesses and is a full coverage survey of the national industry. This survey includes the businesses managing screen productions, as well as those associated with the screen industry, and any businesses or individuals who contract their services to screen production companies. Predominantly, the businesses surveyed are involved in the following activities:

  • Film and video production
  • Post-production services and other film and video activities
  • Film and video distribution
  • Film exhibition
  • Free-to-air television broadcasting
  • Cable and other subscription programming.

A substantial component of the screen industry is made up of individuals and small companies. Although individually these companies may be small, in combination they are an integral part of the industry and it is important that we collect their information.

What is this information used for?

The annual Screen Industry Survey has been designed to develop an understanding of the contribution that the screen industry makes to the New Zealand economy. The survey will produce current and meaningful statistics on many aspects of screen industry activity. The information you provide will be used by the Government to assist the development and delivery of policies that encourage and support the screen industry in New Zealand. This survey will also give you useful information for planning, marketing, and business development.

About giving data

If our business is included in the survey, who should complete the survey?

The survey should be completed by someone who has access to the businesses' financial accounts, and also has an overall knowledge of the business. This would usually be the business owner, Managing Director, or Finance Manager. Since many of the questions are opinion or activity-based, it is not recommended that an accountant completes this form on the businesses' behalf.

How often does this survey take place?

This survey takes place annually.

What if my business is not engaged in screen industry activities?

It is important that you complete and return your questionnaire, even if you consider that it does not apply to your business. Because the screen industry encompasses a number of different activities, the survey is collecting information from a broad range of businesses. Some examples of business activities that may otherwise be missed from the population are the contracted supply of rental properties or sound stages, and supply industry specific equipment to screen contractors or production companies.

How is my privacy protected?

Under the Statistics Act 1975, only authorised people can see your individual information and they must use it only for statistical purposes. Your information will be combined with information from other respondents to prepare summary statistics. Statistics NZ makes sure that no individual response can be identified when the results are published.
