2006 Census of Population and Dwellings – Provisional Counts

Key facts

  • The provisional census night population count of New Zealand on 7 March 2006 was 4,116,900, up 296,150 (7.8 percent) from the 2001 Census.
  • The South Island provisional census night population count exceeded one million for the first time.
  • There has been consistent growth over the majority of the country since the 2001 Census.
  • The regional council area with the greatest growth was Auckland, where the provisional census night population count indicated an increase of 145,060 (12.4 percent) to 1,318,700.
  • The territorial authority with the greatest growth was Queenstown-Lakes District, with a provisional 29.2 percent increase in census night population since the 2001 Census.
  • The provisional count of all occupied dwellings (private and non-private) was 1,469,700, up 101,500 (7.4 percent) since the 2001 Census.
