The provisional census night population count of New Zealand on 7 March 2006 was 4,116,900
, up 296,150 (7.8 percent) from the 2001 Census.
The South Island provisional census night population count exceeded one million
for the first time.
There has been consistent growth over the majority of the country
since the 2001 Census.
The regional council area with the greatest growth was Auckland
, where the provisional census night population count indicated an increase of 145,060 (12.4 percent) to 1,318,700.
The territorial authority with the greatest growth was Queenstown-Lakes District
, with a provisional 29.2 percent increase in census night population since the 2001 Census.
The provisional count of all occupied dwellings
(private and non-private)
was 1,469,700
, up 101,500 (7.4 percent) since the 2001 Census.
