Highlights

From the year ending 30 June 2008 to the year ending 30 June 2009:

  • Across all households, average weekly housing cost expenditure was unchanged from the previous year and resulted from:
    • an increase of 8.1 percent in average weekly property and ground rent payments
    • decreases in average weekly mortgage principal repayments (down 7.1 percent) and average weekly mortgage interest payments (down 2.8 percent).

  • For those paying rent, median weekly household expenditure on rents increased by 9.5 percent to $241.
  • For those making mortgage payments, median weekly household expenditure on mortgages decreased by 4.8 percent to $312.
  • Average annual household income from regular sources increased 5.6 percent to $78,876.
