Commentary

GST sales

Seasonally adjusted sales increased by $1,251 million (1.2 percent) in the September 2001 quarter compared with the June 2001 quarter. Sales increased in July, but decreased in August and September.

Ten out of the 16 industries recorded quarterly growth in seasonally adjusted sales. The largest contributors to the increase came from the electricity and gas; government administration and defence; and the finance and insurance industries. These increases were partly offset by a decrease in manufacturing; and in the agriculture, forestry and fishing industries.

GST purchases

Seasonally adjusted purchases increased by $1,207 million (1.6 percent) in the September 2001 quarter. Purchases increased in July and August, but decreased in September.

Nine out of the 16 industries recorded quarterly growth in seasonally adjusted purchases. The largest contributors to the increase came from the electricity and gas; health and community services; and the transport, storage and communication industries.
