Abstract
Data from the Household Labour Force Survey (HLFS) can be used to reveal the number of people who change their labour force status between quarters. These changes are referred to as ‘gross flows’. Gross flows data are not made available to the public because they are not consistent with published levels of employment, unemployment, and not in the labour force (NILF). Remedying this inconsistency is important because flows can provide more insight into changes in the labour market than the quarterly level estimates. Flows can provide insight into the ‘churn’ of the labour market, for example, how many people are losing their jobs and how many are getting jobs between quarters.
