Standards and Guidelines Review Project

Graph, table and map guidelines and standards

The following is an outline of what we are doing, why we are doing it and how you can help.

Project background

Statistics New Zealand currently has guidelines for the production of graphs, tables and maps. However, these were developed for the print environment and have not been revised to take in the requirements of web publishing. As Statistics NZ moves to a new publishing environment, a need to establish a set of rules applicable to all graphs, tables and maps has arisen. This set of rules will cover the production of graphs, tables and maps both on the web and in hardcopy, and will also aim to meet the e-government and W3C guidelines. It is recognised that there will be exceptions to the rules, as well as a need to continually review and update them.

How you can help

We would like your feedback about the graphs, tables and maps that are currently produced by Statistics NZ, either on the web or in print publications, as well as any ideas you may have in regard to the future production of graphs, tables and maps.

Specific questions and issues

  • How do you use the graphs, tables or maps currently produced by Statistics NZ?
  • What stumbling blocks do you encounter when reading and interpreting our graphs, tables or maps?
  • What could we do better?
  • Have you any examples of graphs, tables or maps from other websites or publications that you have found particularly good or bad?

Going forward, are there any types of graph, table or map you would like to see Statistics NZ produce? Or are there things you would like to see more of, or less of? Examples might include the use of animation in graphics, interactive aspects, colour or more variables.

Any feedback regarding Statistics NZ’s graphs, tables and maps, in particular in answer to the questions posed above, would be gratefully appreciated.
