Sponsored Surveys

The following information sets out the terms and conditions for government departments who choose to engage with Statistics New Zealand in sponsored surveys.

Across government, Statistics New Zealand undertakes a significant amount of the official statistics survey activity within New Zealand. All surveys conducted by Statistics New Zealand are carried out within the legal framework set out in the Statistics Act 1975.

The Act provides that the Government Statistician has sole responsibility for deciding the procedures and methods employed to produce statistics; places a legal obligation on respondents to provide the statistical information requested; provides for the information collected to be analysed and disseminated to a high standard; and requires that individual respondent information be kept confidential and used only for statistical purposes.

Statistics New Zealand occasionally undertakes a sponsored survey in partnership with a sponsoring agency. Government departments (sponsoring agencies) preparing to conduct a survey can choose to have their survey conducted by Statistics New Zealand or to engage the services of private market research companies that also survey the New Zealand public.

Should agencies choose to engage with Statistics New Zealand, they will have access to the statistical resources and expertise of Statistics New Zealand. The applicable provisions of the Statistics Act 1975, as set out in the Introduction, Terms and Conditions, Confidentiality, Survey development and Feasibility Assessment terms and conditions, also apply.
