Implementing ANZSIC 2006 in the Quarterly Employment Survey provides additional detail on the use of a new industrial classification for a major Statistics New Zealand survey. In November 2009, for the first time, results from the Quarterly Employment Survey (QES) for the September 2009 quarter will be published using the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification 2006 (ANZSIC 2006). Previous releases of the QES used ANZSIC 1996. This paper accompanies the set of tables that presents the QES series from March 1989 to June 2009, using ANZSIC 2006. The process for producing these tables is known as back-casting, which is done to preserve a statistical time series.
The paper also discusses the major changes to the industrial groupings that result from using ANZSIC 2006, and how these changes affect the QES. In addition, the process taken to implement the new classification is summarised. Tables showing the contributions of ANZSIC 1996 industrial divisions to the ANZSIC 2006 industrial divisions during the June 2009 quarter are included. Statistics NZ welcomes any comments about this paper. It is being released to support the QES results on 3 November 2009, and to better inform users of the differences between ANZSIC 1996 and ANZSIC 2006.
